      Dr. Vasco Furtado is a researcher in the Artificial Intelligence, working in the areas of Knowledge Representation, Multiagent Systems, Semantic Web and Knowledge Acquisition.

 

 


Academic Formation / Titles

Vasco Furtado is professor of computer science at University of Fortaleza (UNIFOR), Brazil where he also leads a team of researchers in the Knowledge Engineering group that studies agent-based simulation and agent’s explanation on the web.   He has coordinated and developed R&D projects on the law enforcement domain. Prof. Furtado holds a PhD in Informatique from the University of Aix-Marseille III, France in 1997. He were on sabbatical in the Knowledge Systems Laboratory at Stanford University, 2006-2007.

 

 

 


Professional Activities

Dr. Vasco Furtado is a professor at the University of Fortaleza since 1988, lecturing in Computer Science in the Graduate Courses in Applied Computer Science.

As a researcher, he works in this university coordinating the Knowledge Engineering Cell, which is one of the research laboratories that compose the Nucleus of Applications in Information Technology (NATI).

Dr. Vasco Furtado has also been a civil servant for more than twenty years, in the field of Information Technology, and was a Consultant of the Ministry of Justice in Information Technology for Law Enforcement. He served in the position of Coordinator of the Information Technology Sector in the General Office of Public Safety and Social Defense of the State of Ceará for six years, where he had the opportunity to idealize some innovative Projects.

 

 

 


Research Interest

Dr. Vasco is the coordinator of several Research Projects in the areas of Education and Automatic Learning systems, Discovery of Knowledge in Database, Administration of Knowledge, Geo-simulation of Crime and Data Mining on the Grid.

His research works consist of studying and elaborating techniques and methods of development of Intelligent Systems. His main focus is the learning and teaching activity.

Intelligent Systems refer to programs that learn automatically or semi-automatically. Automatic learning is obtained through inductive symbolic algorithms, and semi-automatic learning is obtained from modeling Problem Solving Methods and ontologies. We emphasize the development of Knowledge-based Systems modeled in UPML (Unified Problem-Solving Method Development Language) and Protégé. Such systems have the ability to accomplish explanations through the framework InferenceWEB. The practical side of these researches is the application of learning algorithms for mining data in Grids.

His more recent project aims at developing a web 2.0-based software called WikiCrimes for mapping collaboratively crime on the web. Orthogonal to the development of teaching and learning systems, Dr. Vasco Furtado has also interest in studying how multi-agent systems can be used to knowledge management through learning and teaching systems. Another recent project he is coordinating is SIMPOL in which a crime simulation model inspired on swarm intelligence and using genetic algorithms is being prepared.

 

 

 

Publications

He has Scientific Articles published in journals, besides several publications of works in important national and international events, as Conferences, Congress, Seminars and Workshops; he also has publications in Journals and Books.

We highlight in his bibliographical production, the authorship of the book “Management and Information technology in Public Security”, in which Dr. Vasco Furtado describes his experience in the coordination of the modernization process of Public Safety in the State of Ceara.

Informal Space

Together with his family Doctor Furtado enjoy his best moments watching DVD at home. He has an eclectic taste: from Jean-Luc Ponty to Burt Bacharach through Lizz Wright.

He likes sports very much. Basketball and soccer are his favorites.

He participated in several national basketball championships, playing for the state of Ceará. Nowadays he is part of the Association of Master Athletes “Friends of basketball”. If you want to join us you have only to go to Náutico Club on Sunday mornings.

As a good Brazilian, he plays soccer three times a week. He is pleased to be one of the “ciços” in “Ball in the Net”. If you want to join us, go to “Ball in the Net” every Saturday afternoon, drink a lot of beer, pay R$ 33,00 at Tânia´s Bar, joke with all present and accept complaints during the game. After a month, if you are still with us, you are a “Ciço”.

“Ciço” has a very complex definition. The last time I heard one it was a Life Style.
