The modernization of Law Enforcement organizations with the
intensive use of Information technology is one of the vectors that provide
efficiency and effectiveness to the police work. The book
“Administration and Information Technology in Public Safety” is
about the experience acquired by Prof. Dr. Vasco Furtado,
in six years of coordination of the modernization process of the General
Office of Public Safety and Social Defense of the State of Ceará. The book introduces
the concepts, procedures and techniques used with this end. In a didactic
way, the author transmits relevant knowledge for the development of projects
essential to safety institutions the Integrated Center of Safety Operations -
CIOPS, the System of Judiciary Information - SIP and the Criminal
Identification System. The description of these projects allows us to
understand how technology can benefit police work through aid in the
investigation of crimes, in the speeding up of services answering requests
from citizens, in the solution of crimes, finally, in a better quality
rendering of public safety services.
The work possesses clear importance in the technological context, since the
described projects exemplify the use of technologies, the most diversified,
such as mobile computation, biometry and the geo-processing, in direct
benefit to the population. Its importance in the education context is also emphasized
because it will be extremely useful in police academies, for police officers
to be able to share the knowledge detailed. The Ministry of Justice noticed
this importance and acquired copies to distribute to all the institutions
linked to public safety in the country. Besides the mentioned factors, this
work incorporates, due to its pioneering character, another aspect that is
revealed to be extremely important for the future of Law Enforcement
organizations in Brazil. It inaugurates a phase of knowledge production on Law
Enforcement under the optics of another discipline, Information technology, that enriches strikingly the debate on the
theme.
